Watford Riverwell is an ambitious long-term scheme between Watford Borough Council and Kier Property to transform a large, 65-acre, area of land to the south of Watford General Hospital and Watford Football Club.

Over the next 15 to 20 years, Watford Riverwell will create an attractive new community that will deliver new jobs, 1,000 homes, a 250 unit retirement village, green and public open space, and community facilities.

Its location next to Watford General Hospital, which serves up to 500,000 people, also means that it offers a once in a lifetime opportunity for future development on the hospital site.

To date, a new road has been opened to unlock the site; the first business zone of 7,000m2 commercial space has been completed and released to the market; construction of homes on the Woodlands zone has begun with the first being released to the market in July 2018; planning permission has been granted for the Mayfield retirement village and plans for homes on the Waterside zone have been submitted for planning approval.

The partnership is now working on a masterplan for the zone to the north of the new road, adjacent to the hospital and football ground.

“Modern day life is hectic, so we’re seeing families choosing not to have a garden because they don’t have time to care for it. Instead, people are heading to their local parks or making the most of communal spaces, which are maintained for them. Plus, people like the very close knit community that springs up around family apartments like Woodlands – they feel safe and supported. ”

Peter Taylor – Elected Mayor of Watford
